Bedcovers & Pillow Covers
Bedcovers & Pillow Covers
Patients’ bed covers and pillow covers are among the items which come in direct contact with patients and are contaminated by the microflora of patients. Bed covers are also contaminated by the patient’s secretions, body fluids, and blood. Bedcovers are further contaminated during talking, sneezing, and coughing & indoor microbes are present in the air and on surfaces. Ideally, bedcovers are changed once a day so microbes get plenty of time to grow and spread. Bedcovers are highly touched surfaces and serve as a source of cross-contamination & microbial spread to healthcare workers & visitors, even after sterilization and the use of disinfectant.
According to the American Journal of Infection Control (IC), if the patient occupying bed before was on antibiotics, the next patient of getting C.difficile infection goes up by 22%, while Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) findings indicated 38% times patients’ bed pillows are contaminated by more than three different types of virulent microorganisms (Klebsiella, Pseudomonas, and Clostridium).
